Turning 65: Coordinating Medicare Enrollment With TRICARE for Life

If you have TRICARE, turning 65 means it’s time to take action. Your TRICARE for Life (TFL) coverage only starts when you’re enrolled in both Medicare Part A and Part B—and enrolling early keeps you from having a coverage gap.

Enroll in Medicare Parts A & B Early

  • TFL starts the same day you have both Parts A & B.

  • Enroll at least 2 months before your 65th birthday to avoid a gap.

  • Sign up online at the Social Security website or by contacting the Social Security Administration.

Know What Medicare Covers

  • Part A (Hospital Insurance) – Covers inpatient hospital stays, skilled nursing facilities, hospice care, and some home health care.

    • Usually free if you or your spouse paid Social Security taxes for 10 years.

  • Part B (Medical Insurance) – Covers outpatient care, home health, durable medical equipment, and preventive services.

    • Has a monthly premium based on your income.

You Don’t Need Part C or Part D for TFL

  • Part C (Medicare Advantage) – Private insurance with its own rules and networks.

  • Part D (Drug Coverage) – Not needed because you already have prescription benefits through the TRICARE Pharmacy Program.

  • If you do choose Part C or D, know how your claims will coordinate (see TFL + Medicare Advantage guide).

  • Keep DEERS updated to avoid any benefit interruptions.

If You Have Other Health Insurance (OHI)

  • If you or your spouse have employer-sponsored or other coverage, TFL pays after Medicare and your OHI.

  • Always check if a service is covered by Medicare, TRICARE, or both to avoid surprise bills.
